Frequently-Asked Questions
Where do you meet?
On July 13th, 2008 we starting meeting for Sunday morning services at Bellevue West High School (map and directions). This facility provides us with ample space to begin ministry as well as accommodate growth.
Why are you establishing another location?
The goal of OBC has never been to become a large church but rather to make a large impact. From our early days as a church plant we have been consumed with the simple task of proclaiming and living the truth for the glory of Christ. The burden of the elders is not simply to reach the communities in Omaha, but also those in surrounding areas, extending into the whole world. As a result we believe it is right for us to take steps to establish a God-centered, gospel-proclaiming, life-changing, and self-replicating ministry in Sarpy County that more people would come to see the beauty and glory of Christ through the gospel.
What is the difference between a church plant and a campus?
A church plant typically starts off being financially supported by another church with an immediate view toward autonomy; they have their elders, pastor, and in some cases their own building. In the case of a campus there is not an autonomous work established. Instead, we will be an extension of the Main Campus (79th & State). In our case the campus approach seems to make sense, particularly in light of the close proximity of Omaha and the Offutt area. By establishing a campus we are able to share leadership, resources, and personnel; which typically are among the chief challenges facing a church plant.
What is the relationship between the South Campus and the Main Campus?
The South Campus is led by the same elders as the Main Campus. As a result there is great continuity between the campuses. There are distinctions in terms of meeting locations but there is still great freedom and encouragement to attend various events (i.e. Sunday evening service, youth events, VBS, Men's Breakfasts, etc..).
As mentioned above the OBC elders exercise oversight over the South Campus. Funding for the campus will come from the OBC budget. All giving from the South Campus will be added to the general offering of OBC each Sunday.
Many multi-site churches uses video feeds from the main campus. Is this your approach or will you have live preaching?
At OBC preaching is a high priority. We believe that edification is the purpose of the corporate gathering of the people of God. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy to make sure that he made preaching a priority in his ministry (2 Tim. 4:1-2). So when we gather together we want to be devoted to preaching, "Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching" (1 Tim. 4:13). This is such a priority for us that we would not pursue a separate campus without appointing a man gifted by God to preach each week. So, no we will not have video feeds but live preaching week in and week out.
Are you planning to build a new building for the church to meet in?
With limited resources and personnel the plan is to continue to find affordable renting opportunities for Sunday mornings. The long term plan would be not to rent, but it is currently too early to speculate on buildings or locations.
